How to Refer to SOS Signs of Suicide
Please use the full name: “SOS Signs of Suicide” when describing our organization. Once the full name has been used in a publication, it may be shortened to “SOS”. SOS should always be written first and no parentheses or periods are necessary.
Approved Program Description
SOS Signs of Suicide provides evidence-based suicide prevention education to students from middle school through college – and to the adults who support them. Trusted by thousands of schools nationwide, our flagship youth program has been shown to reduce suicide attempts by 64%.
SOS programs teach individuals how to identify signs of suicide and depression, and what to do if they’re worried about themselves or a friend. They also offer training and resources that further support suicide prevention and mental health education. SOS is a service of Riverside Community Care, a non-profit leader in behavioral health and human services.
How to Refer to Your Organization
Service organizations that have an SOS Provider license for use in multiple schools may describe themselves as “SOS Signs of Suicide Providers”. Sample language: “Our agency is proud to be an SOS Signs of Suicide Provider. As part of our mission to prevent youth suicide, our staff brings SOS for Students to local schools throughout our community.”
Please note: SOS Provider licenses are not applicable to individual schools or districts. Learn more about becoming an SOS Provider.
Safe Messaging
When using our branding, we encourage you to ensure that any associated messaging aligns with our standards for safety. Safe messaging is critical to our work because certain types of messages about suicide can increase individuals’ risk or undermine prevention goals.
SOS Signs of Suicide follows safe messaging principles by promoting hope and encouraging action through the ACT: Acknowledge, Care, Tell framework, which gives students and faculty/staff clear, practical steps to take when they are concerned about themselves or a friend. By focusing on prevention skills, SOS reinforces that everyone has a role in suicide prevention.
SOS content does not include statistics about suicide. While numbers can show the scope of the issue, research indicates that sharing statistics may unintentionally make suicide seem more common or inevitable, which can reduce hope, discourage help-seeking, and negatively affect vulnerable individuals.
We encourage all SOS Providers and clients to learn more about safe messaging by reviewing the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s framework.
